Root Canals & Endodontics
Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy, endodontic treatment, or root canal therapy) is a treatment sequence for the infected pulp. Pulp tissue consists of nerve, vascular and lymphatic tissue. Upon infection the proper treatment is to remove all pulp tissue and seal the remaining hard tissue off from reinfecting bacteria. Root canals can often be avoided with early detection of decay and treatment through fillings and crowns. In the cases where endodontic (root canal) treatment can not be avoided it is essential to treat the infection early and completely. At Davenport Dental we have the experience, expertise, and instrumentation to not only properly diagnose but to treat infected root canals.
Endodontic therapy is required when the pulpal tissue at the center of the tooth has become infected. Untreated dental caries, tooth avulsion or trauma, failed, aged or expired dental restoration, dry mouth, and chronic illness are some of the causes of pulpal infection and the need for root canals. A thorough examination and x rays will help prevent and detect the need for endodontic treatment.
